Tips for satellite radio and unlocking Keurig brewers
When my boys were really young, I had them convinced that I knew everything. More than that, I could read their minds and had eyes in the back of my head, too. That didn’t last for long, but I sure had fun with it while it did. And now I am having the time of my life with you, my dear readers. Your letters and tips help to keep me on top of technological advances plus everyday stuff I want to know, but cannot possibly keep up with on my own. I appreciate and depend on you more than you will ever know!
RADIO-FREE. We bought a new car, which came with a trial offer of SiriusXM satellite radio service. It’s my wife’s car and she loves the satellite radio feature; but we do not like the cost.
Our cellphone service provider, T-Mobile, allows us to stream from select music services without affecting our data usage. These music apps have both free and subscription services available, depending on whether we want to pay to eliminate the commercials.
Voila! We can stream the music from our smart phones to the car stereo because of the features built into the car stereo (using USB, Bluetooth or a headphone output jack), and it’s just like having the satellite radio for free. We can make a coast-to-coast drive without much loss of our favorite music at a savings of at least $10/month. — Dave
FREEDOM TO CHOOSE. I enjoyed your article on the Keurig coffee machine. I have something to add on how to unlock the Keurig 2.0 coffee brewer.
Anyone who bought the new Keurig 2.0 coffee maker may have had a rude awakening when they realized the thing has lockout technology that prevents it from working with any brand of pods other than its own “K-Cups.”
Here’s my tip: the Rogers Family Coffee company has developed an easily installed “Freedom Clip” to unlock Keurig 2.0 so it will accept any brand of coffee pods –including Keurig’s own refillable pod that won’t even work in the new 2.0 version!
Rogers believes that every Keurig 2.0 owner has the right to choose any option of coffee pod available for his or her Keurig brewer.
Rogers will supply the simple device free, including directions on how to install it in the Keurig 2.0 model, when you order a trial-size box of Rogers’ OneCups for $1.99, which includes shipping. These cups fit perfectly in the Keurig 2.0 when the Freedom Clip has been installed. And so does the Keurig refillable pod designed for its earlier versions of the brewing machine. The clip works great! — Gary
JAPANESE BEETLES TRAPPED! I am a gardener and do not like to use toxic insecticides. I have battled Japanese beetles in various ways. They are selective but they devour my green beans and they seem to adore a lovely flowering bush I received as a gift. They eat its leaves into skeletal outlines. They also like my Knock Out rose bush. So I purchased a Japanese beetle trap and does it ever work! You assemble two plastic pieces, a lure and a special plastic bag and hang it downwind from the plant(s). It is ingenious. Beetles collect in the bottom of the bag (but can’t get out) and others flock around the lure before falling in. It really works. Hurray! — Ellie
